The Mastering Salsa Timing CD and eBook is highly recommended in conjunction with regular classes.
Level 1 – During your first month, you will learn the fundamentals of salsa dancing. Basic footwork and turn patterns include the basic step, side breaks, back breaks, forward breaks, right turn, left turn and cross body lead. Basic timing concepts are introduced. Take this class for at least 1-2 months. This class is required unless you've taken 'on 2' classes before. Evaluation is required to place you in another level.
Level 2 – This class continues building on the salsa fundamentals learned in Basics 1. Moves taught are: Open Break (Breakaway), Inside Turn, Outside Turn, Drop Catch, Checks. Basic Shines are introduced. Take this class for 2-4 months. 2 months of Beginner Basics 2 is required before entry into the advanced beginner class.
Testing and Evaluation required before entering Level 3 and above. All beginner moves and shines will be tested. An improvised social dance with the instructor to test leading/following ability, style and attitude and timing will be required. Before entering the Level 4 classes, student should be able to demonstrate proper On2 timing.
Level 3 - More variations on the basic beginner moves to include double hand-holds, handshake holds, hammerlocks. New moves taught include checks, copa, basket, spot turn. Shines repertoire expands. Proper Timing is continually reinforced. Double Turns are introduced. Take this class until you are ready to test for Level 4.
Level 4 - Advanced variations are taught. Multiple turns for followers and leaders. Specialty Moves. Opportunity for Student Performances.
Practice Sessions, Socials and Club Outings
Aside from the structured class environment, we highly encourage our students to practice on the real dance floor. This is where you apply what you've learned. It is crucial to your progress as a dancer. To make this easier for you, we host Westchester Sunday Salsa Socials every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month as well as Vintage Salsa Wednesdays, Westchester's longest running weekly salsa social. Performance Opportunities
We have performance opportunities year round at local events, nearby salsa festivals and congresses, as well as international congresses. Performance is not for every student, but those wishing to shine on stage will be guided through the creative process of salsa choreography and performance.
Level 4 Student Performance Class – Interview required, must currently be enrolled in Level 4 class.
